Change of Generation

written by 20204 Kim Eunhwan When we talk with our parents, we can often feel the generation gap. Not only with our parents, we can also feel it when talking with or listening to other adults. When we talk about animation, they don’t know much about what we watch, and we don’t know much what they saw too. Also, we can’t imagine how our parents and other adults lived with their neighbors friendly. Changed Generation The picture above shows the change in cell phones. We can see simply the difference between the generations. If we look more closely, we can see many differences: camera, storage space, speed of performance, etc. We can feel many differences directly by looking at the stack of cell phones. Culture of the Past Our parents’ generation lived with their neighbors closely. They believed in their neighbors, and sometimes, they depended on their neighbors to overcome some adversities. Sharing food during mealtime was common for them. They even knew almost every neighbor’s name. But...

Positive Mind to Keep Moving

written by 20204 Kim Eunhwan & 20715 Yoon Dawon THE PRESS: What was your first impression of SAWL? Principal Park Jeongsook: At first, when I walked into the school, I felt that the buildings were generally traditional places. Walking through the halls, the students I met seemed very happy and bowed well. It made me think our school students are all so kind and civil. It was so good. THE PRESS: Well, we are so proud that we are those students, too. Do you have any hopes for Sawlians? Principal Park: Above all, I wish that our school students make the best effort they can for their futures. Also I want them to be those who are polite and care not only for themselves but also for other people. THE PRESS: We agree with those words. Did you have some personal or school-related plans made when you came to Suwon Academy of World Languages? Principal Park: First, I’ll tell you about my personal plans; digital technology is rapidly developing because of Industry 4.0. Unfortunately,...

Communication for a Wider World

Image
written by 20114 Oh Seo Ah People communicate with each other every single day, and communication has been a fundamental part of human life. It’s remarkable how quickly information, both trivial and profound, can travel across our interconnected world. Right now, the universality of communication is more apparent than ever. Verbal communication is equally essential to our daily lives. Conversations with family and friends provide emotional support and strengthen bonds. In the workplace, effective verbal communication is vital for teamwork and productivity. From persuasive speeches to heartfelt conversations, the spoken word has the power to connect with people. Non-verbal communication means conveying information without using words. Non-verbal cues, including facial expressions, body language and tone of voice, play a crucial role in conveying emotions. They often communicate feelings more vividly than words alone. For instance, a warm smile can instantly express friendliness, w...

Future Evolution

written by 20220 Jang Yoon Seo It was only 200,000 years ago that Homo sapiens , modern human beings, appeared in approximately 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history. Civilization began around 10,000 BC when people learned how to farm, the lifestyle that relied on the natural environment lasted for a long time. Then, with the scientific revolution 500 years ago, human life entered a path of full-scale change. Finally, with the advent of the steam engine 250 years ago, the rate of change changed from addition to multiplication. Electricity, invented in the late 19 th century, ushered in the era of mass production, and computers in the late 20 th century, followed by automation, ushered in the online era. Now in the 21 st century, the 4 th Industrial Revolution is starting. The convergence of things and technologies centering on digital is rapidly progressing. As a result, the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds, online and offline, and humans and machines are disappearing....

SAWL Makes TRUST

Image
written by 20720 Jung Do Young   THE PRESS: You're new to SAWL, what kind of expectations and mindset did you have before coming?   Vice Principal Lee Eun Kyoung: When I first came to SAWL, I had heard that it was very clean. Also, what I had heard about the basic lifestyle of Sawlians was correct, like wearing their uniforms and following the rules. I was worried about what kind of mindset I should have at SAWL, where the manpower is firmly organized. In particular, SAWL is a school that students and parents trust a lot, so as a member of the educational community, I thought I should be proud and contribute to the joy of SAWL.   THE PRESS: What do you think are the strengths of SAWL and students?   Vice Principal Lee: Teachers are very capable. In particular, teachers have high self-esteem and pride. They are very wise. Also, they love the students so much. Students soak up information from them like sponges. SAWL’s strength is that the human resources of faculty an...

To a Wider World!

Image
written by 20220 Jang Yoon Seo THE PRESS: If you could describe SAWL in one word, which word would you choose? Principal Kang Kil Ja: Challenge. When I think of SAWL, students and teachers who challenge themselves are the first things that come to my mind. For our students and teachers, it is a choice and a challenge from the moment of admission. SAWL is a place of wonderful people who constantly grow through challenges. THE PRESS: Is there anything you would like to do at SAWL? Principal Kang: I have always been interested in multiculturalism, contemporary history and diaspora. So I’ve thought about establishing a network with second and third-generation overseas immigrants in each major and continuing exchanges. Even though it is difficult for each major, I hope it is possible for them through club activities. THE PRESS: What do you think about the future of SAWL and SAWL students? Principal Kang: Sawlians have the passion and confidence to take on challenges, and they know the joy...

The Connection

written by 20105 Kim Sang Eun   The hyperconnected era is how people refer to the 21 st century. Highly advanced technologies have become as intelligent as humans. Developments surpass human’s level are continuing. This implies that the future society we have to live in and lead will also be a hyperconnected era where everything forms a connection and a relationship. So, what can the connection mean? This can mean a connection between machines. Internet of Things (IoT) technology enables every device to connect and cooperate with each other to achieve more efficient results. The connection can also mean a relationship between machines and people. For example, with the invention of wearable devices, cell phones were knocked out of their position in the digital revolution. This is because people can carry and use wearable devices on their bodies. However, the true meaning of connection symbolized by the hyperconnected era is the connection between humans. Whatever ...

1cm Diving Is the Key to Happiness

Image
written by 20224 Jun Min Ah Have you ever heard of 1cm diving ? It means a tiny piece of happiness out of your life. Everyone around the world has been experiencing the pandemic since December of last year. It might make some people unhappy. There could be those who have difficulties in achieving their goals. Others may feel disappointed about not achieving their goals or just the year in general. However, we do not have to be sad and lose hope. Trying just one thing can be worthy and be the start of your significant positive outcome. Even though it can be seen as trivial, it is better than doing nothing. There is a saying, “Well begun is half done.” This expression is especially needed for this year; it was inevitable to have a problem with our plans. To stop the spread of the pandemic, we have to follow some rules and regulations. These regulations require some limits for our lives. Therefore, we do not have to blame ourselves when things go amiss. Then, how can we overco...

Recovering: The Process of Taking One Step Forward written by 20424 Choi Sohi

“Mom, why do I have a fever? I feel so awful.” Do you have a memory of asking this kind of question when you were sick? I always hated catching a fever that made me suffer through excruciating pain and deep despair. Can you imagine how my mom answered? “It’s just a process of recovering” she usually said. This can sound ridiculous, awful pain making me recover, but it’s true. Scientifically, a fever is what helps white blood cells fight pathogens. Turning your eyes to life, you will notice it goes same with this principle. A lot of things in life don’t go as well as people think. Remember the first time you heard that you had got into SAWL. All of you must have been very happy dreaming of a wonderful school life, but eventually you would have realized that reality is different: surrounded by unknown people for an entire week, competing with friends who look superior in every aspect, same grades that seem to betray the effort. I felt the same way. However, comparing that moment wi...
