January

This year Korea had heavy snow, and several people amused others by making snowmen. The public usually responded favorably to the various snowmen, including ducks and character-looking snowmen like Elsa in Frozen. However, the act of destroying snowmen caused displeasure. This snowman destruction behavior emerged as a social issue.


February

COVID-19 changed Lunar New Year’s Day. Families are unable to gather together due to the rule. People exchanged untact greetings to their families. Like this, COVID-19 changed the Lunar New Year’s culture. But the mind that people think of their family remains unchanged despite COVID-19’s crisis.


March

Joseon Gumasa eventually decided to abolish it after the second episode. Joseon Gumasa became controversial from the first episode, which was covered with Sinocism. It was also criticized for disparaging Korean great men and distorting history.


April

In April, Korean actress Youn Yuh Jung won the Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards. She is the 2nd Asian actress who won the Best Supporting Actress and the first Korean winner in the Awards. Even Parasite didn’t achieve that in 2020. She has won at least 36 awards as a supporting actress for Minari.


May

In May, Jeong In’s death was revealed. She was only a year old when she was struck by her adoptive parents and died in October 2020. After a TV program broadcasted her death, many Koreans were mad at the truth of her death and made a national petition.


June

Team Heungkuk in Korean women’s volleyball announced the suspension of twin-sister players. They were in controversy over the school bullying incident in the past. They had made no agreement or apology to the victims. Team Heungkuk suspended these two players, believing that it would be difficult for them to perform under these circumstances.


July

MSG Wannabe, a vocal group formed on MBC’s program How Do You Play?, gained huge popularity. A unique combination of its members attracted people’s attention, and songs such as “Only Looking At You” they released ranked high on the music charts.


August

Tokyo Olympics ended on the 8th.  Even though the Tokyo Olympics had a lot of difficulties, many stars emerged. The Korean women’s volleyball team makes people enthusiastic. The archery team wrote history again, and fencing players played thrilling games. In addition to these athletes, many other athletes also shone for South Korea at the Olympics.


September

BTS delivered a message of hope to future generations to achieve the goal of sustainable development at the UN General Assembly in New York on the 20th. At the end of the speech, a pre-recorded performance video was broadcast around the world.


October

The Korean projectile Nuri flew toward space on the 21st. However, as the dummy satellite failed to settle in its target orbit, it did not achieve perfect success. President Moon Jae In encouraged researchers and officials by saying, “Unfortunately, we didn’t reach the goal perfectly, but we did a very good job with the first launch.”
