Do you enjoy watching Netflix? If you don’t use Netflix, you’ve heard a lot of people around you talk about it. They probably said, “I watched Netflix last night”, or “Let’s watch Netflix after this exam”.
Nowadays Netflix is a familiar and natural service to us. All the things that provide us with media services like Netflix, we called it OTT service.
What Is OTT Service?
OTT service is an abbreviation of over-the-top service. Top here refers to a set-top box, which implies that a content provider is going over the top of existing internet services.
This media service is offered directly to viewers via the Internet. It provides various media contents like movies, dramas, videos, TV programs, and music.
If you can’t understand this, you have heard about the services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube premium, and Watcha. Don’t they provide us with various media contents? These are OTT services.
Why Do People Use It?
The demand for the service has increased significantly over the course of 2020.
Because of COVID-19, people are staying in their houses and need to find something fun. So they chose several OTT services, because they offer many different and interesting programs.
It can be streamed anywhere. It has good mobility, so people can watch videos without being constrained in a certain place. You could be on the subway, in the bathroom, or in the tent at the campground and be able to watch it. You don’t need to be stuck in front of the TV.
OTTs don’t have commercials. When watching TV, there are so many commercials. Commercials before the program starts, in the middle of the program, and advertising in the program. People can feel tired at those disruptors.
This service allows consumers to choose more freely than TV. If you just watch TV, it should be watched according to the schedule provided by the broadcasting company. In order to see the program that you want, you need to watch it on time or make additional payments.
However, by using an OTT service, this allows you to see the program at any time, anywhere. Giving viewers a choice is what makes many people choose this service.

The PRESS: Are you using OTT services such as Netflix or Watcha?
Seo: Yes, I’m using Netflix.
The PRESS: Why do you use this service?
Seo: This is because interest in broadcasting on TV has decreased and at the same time, interest in content released on Netflix has increased.
The PRESS: What do you think is the advantage of this service?
Seo: I think the advantage is that we can easily access foreign broadcasts and high-quality broadcasts.
The PRESS: Lastly, is there anything you want them to improve on?
Seo: It would be nice to have the part for conspicuously where we can see algorithms based on our taste, like a function of YouTube.
Problems With OTT Service
There are some problems with this service.
The profit structure is disadvantageous for filmmakers. Some filmmakers claimed that this is because of the OTT service’s structure. The structure allows for many programs to be viewed without limitation for a month with a single payment. However, for traditional TV or IPTV, there is a payment for every single movie that is watched.
The OTT service provides proportional revenue to filmmakers. This is why they said there is a disadvantage in the profitable structure. However, the OTT service companies said that only a few of the thousands of movies have this happen, and that it is a problem that can be solved.
This service could cause the movie content market to collapse. With the activation of the OTT service, the demand for movie screenings at movie theaters or the use of TV VOD may be reduced. That would disrupt the current content market. However, changes in the media market are scheduled at a time when times are changing. This is because endless development is needed to provide better services.
