Here is part four of the six-part series on students going physically to school.

Some argue that it is never a good idea to send all the students to school when the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases is still at a dangerous level. But, unfortunately, those people are obscuring the larger truth.

More and more people are getting vaccinated at a remarkable rate, and students between 12 and 17 would soon be able to get their shots as of October 18th. Given this, the spread of the disease would gradually subside, eventually making an environment safe enough for students to go to school.

However, there is an even more crucial reason students should be physically at school rather than taking online classes at home. Students who take online classes lack proper education, and their understanding is much lower than those who go to school.

According to a survey by Jeonbuk Institute of Education, only 20.4% of the students said that online classes were sufficient to understand the learning materials, whereas 34.6% said they could not understand in depth.

When asked if online learning helps concentrate on studying, 49.8% of students answered “No”.

Furthermore, online classes worsen the gap between the students of high-income households and low-income households. They vary by their accessibility to digital devices and their overall lives such as meals and the environment to study. Therefore, to achieve the goal of equal and better education, a policy to send all the students to school in Korea should be implemented.
