January: Forest Fires

The forest fire in Balsan-ri, Sinbuk-eup, Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, was extinguished in a day. The forest fire that started here at 1:56 p.m. on January 4th burned seven forest hectares for about 20 hours. They mobilized nine forest fire-fighting helicopters and 510 government officials, including the Korea Forest Service, the fire department and the military unit to extinguish the fire. No casualties were reported, and the exact cause was not known.

 

February: Academy Awards

In February, the Korean film Parasite won four trophies at the 92nd Academy Awards. It is the first time in 101 years that a Korean film has been awarded at an Academy Awards. Parasite has become a proud work, setting a new milestone in the world movie history.

 

March: Nth Room Case                              

It has been discovered that there was continuous sexual abuse on social media targeting female teenagers from 2018 to March 2020. The perpetrators mostly committed digital sex crimes using secret social media such as Telegram and made profits by selling pornagraphy to paid members.

 

April: Election Day                                        

On April 15th, the 21st National Assembly election was held in compliance with the strict quarantine rules amid the danger of COVID-19. The result of this election was a landslide victory for the liberal party. The ruling party won 180 seats, while the conservative opposition party had only 103 seats.     

 

May: The Truth about Donations

In May, Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Lee Yongsoo criticized Yoon Mihyang , a national assembly member, in a press conference. The content was the uncertainty in the use of donations from the demonstrations that are held on every Wednesday. Also, she claims to abolish the demo. At this, Yoon refutes that all of that is not true. At the time, she hadn’t been investigated for suspicion of accounting irregularities.


June: Cereal Launch

In June, spring onion-flavored cereal appeared, creating a sensation. Kellogg Co.’s cereal Chex has been consistently asked to release its green onion flavor since 2004. Finally, it came out on the market. The public’s response to the spring onion-flavored Chex was very diverse.

 

July: Pray for Seoul’s Mayor

On July 10th, Seoul Mayor Wonsoon Park was found dead at a park near Bukhansan Mountain. People suspect he committed suicide because he was accused of sexual harassment by his former secretary but are questioning his sudden death. In the midst of countless speculations, his funeral was held for five days as the mayor of Seoul.

 

August: 2020’s Best Summer Song

SSAK3 is a group created on an entertainment program called How Do You Play? SSAK3 aims to strengthen those suffering from heat and COVID-19. “Beach Again” is their title track, and it has been ranked number one on the music charts against idols such as BLACKPINK and Hwasa.

 

September: Agricultural Crisis

Farmers suffered a lot during the summer from a series of typhoons and prolonged rainy season. Because of the abnormal climate, the prices of agricultural products raised immensely. The supply stopped. It made some restaurants unable to provide menus containing tomatoes. Most hamburger places have hamburgers without tomatoes.

 

October: Public Fear of Flu Shots

As of October 23rd, a total of 32 people died after receiving the flu vaccine. Health authorities are currently investigating the relationship between vaccination and death. The doctors’ association recommended that the flu vaccine be tested after a week’s delay. Patients who have already gotten the flu vaccine were advised to immediately visit medical institutions for treatment if any unusual symptoms caused physical discomfort.
