Less Population Needs Less Teachers

The population decline in Korea is getting worse year by year. As a result of the National Statistical Office’s announcement, the number of babies born in 2021 was 4.3% less from 2019. The total population of Korea in 2022 is 51.62 million, which is down from the last year, 2021.

The problems for this population decline are really diverse. The decrease in the labor force due to a lack of jobs, the decrease in the population and an extremely aging society have adverse effects on society.

Then, what are the disadvantages that can be felt when looking at the population decline for Korean students who want to be teachers?

According to the 2019 Elementary and Secondary Career Education Status Survey results, “teachers are in the top three desired jobs for middle and high school students.” However, there is a crisis in hiring teachers due to a significant decrease in the number of students.

In addition, it is said that college students who actually prepare for the teacher’s license examination and wait to become teachers wait an average of one year and four months, even if they pass the appointment examination.

Due to the population decline and a significant drop in the birth rate, schools are gradually closing down. More and more people are failing to become teachers even if they pass the test because there are few places for teachers. Due to the previously mentioned, students who dream of becoming teachers are gradually decreasing their career hopes.

Sawlians who said their dream career is to be a teacher showed what they think about the situation. First, all respondents said they realized the decline in teaching jobs. They know it is because of the low birth rate. Also, they said that according to the current classroom, unlike the previous generations, the number of homeroom classes is reduced, and it is often mentioned in the news.

When asked if they are willing to be a teacher, even though being a teacher is hard these days, some students said that their dream of becoming a teacher is not firm due to the decrease in the number of teachers due to the population decline. Also, they are looking for a job in the social welfare sector in the aging era.

On the other hand, some students expressed strong confidence, saying that they could be teachers even though it’s hard. One student showed extreme confidence, saying they did not want to abandon their career path due to a simple drop in the number of students.

Same with some Sawlians, other students in Korea are refusing to be teachers because of the decline of the population. In the case of middle school students, the number of students admiring to be a teacher in the future decreased from 18.1% to 10.9%. Likewise, the number of high school students wanting to be a teacher in the future decreased by 12.4% to 7.4%.

The perception of students who dream of becoming teachers is changing due to the decrease in population. College students who are making efforts to become school teachers are in a sad reality. In addition, the population decline is not only related to teachers but other social problems. Therefore, we should be interested in the population decline and try to solve it.
