Mini-Sports Day: The Oasis in SAWL Life
written by 10208 Kim Jun Woo
These days, students have no chance to enjoy sports activities in school life due to COVID-19. It is hard for students not to be able to release their stress from studying and exhausting schedules. However, Mini-Sports Day, which was held in the SAWL school gym, Eagle Hall, after class time on July 18th, could solve this problem.
All first-graders gathered in the gym to take part in this meaningful event. It was a meaningful four hours for the 17th-generation Sawlians to have an awesome experience and relieve academic stress.
Mini-Sports Day was started by the head teacher of first grade, Ms. Choi’s idea. She summoned each class’s P.E. leaders together and suggested that they should design and prepare for the Mini-Sports Day.
After that, the event was totally prepared by each class’s P.E. leader. They did several meetings to select what kind of sports they do, make rules about them, and choose what prize would be given. Thanks to their great efforts, the event could be held on schedule.
Class 1-1 P.E leader Kwak Jun Seon said it was an awesome experience to create and progress the event. He also said he wants to prepare more diverse and better games next time if he has a chance.
The first game was a group jump rope. Each class selected 12 representative players who were divided into 2 spinners and 10 jumpers. Spinners spun the rope, and jumpers passed the rope one by one for 2 minutes while staff counted the number of successful jumps. Not only the players but also the classmates who were not selected also participated in the game by passionate cheering. The final winner was Class 1-2 English majors who succeeded in 243 jumps. Even though it was a very simple game, students’ ardor and heated atmosphere made the game much more exciting.
After dinner time, dodgeball began. There were 15 players in the 1st half and 2nd half each, and the time limit was 5 minutes for each half. Since the game’s scale became far bigger than the jump rope event, the atmosphere became much hotter and more intense. During the dodgeball game, staff received song requests from students to maintain the mood. It leads to a successful outcome for spectators and players enjoying the game. Result of a fierce tournament, Class 1-1 English majors, who showed good cooperation, won the championship.
There was supposed to be a mission race after dodgeball; however, there was too little time left. So the staff held an emergency meeting and decided to do other activities replacing the mission race. Instead, they served energetic music to students and turned off the lights to enjoy the event. Everyone came out to the main floor and enjoyed the last event altogether. At this moment, all of the 17th Sawlians became one.
Mini-Sports Day was held at the ideal time when the final exams and first semester in SAWL were finished. Even though it was the first time and an innovative event, 17th-generation Sawlians showed great satisfaction with this event, according to their public opinion. Due to these favorable responses, this event is likely to be held next year. It is expected to expand to second graders.
