What is Gapsinjeonbyon?

Since the late Joseon period, the society of the Joseon dynasty has had an influx of Western culture through the Qing Dynasty. 

Some middle-class intellectuals and Westerners have made a move to break the old framework of the feudal system and move into modern society, such as demanding rights for themselves. The lower classes have begun to claim that they are human beings. In addition to political and social changes, there was a heightened threat of aggression from the Western and American capitalist powers, who were out-of-force and demanding normalcy. 

Among these, voices were heard from all over the country that they should not simply lock the door. The ministry and the intelligentsia demanded an alternative to the Korean government.

On December 4, 1884, Kim Ok-kyun, Park Young-hyo, Seo Jae-pil, Seo Gwang-beom, and Hong Young-sik, the Kaew-hwa Party, tried to drive out the Su-gu-dang, the center of the Cheok people who depended on the Qing Dynasty. These five men establish the Kaew-hwa regime. 

The incident was called Gapsinjeonbyon which means “political movement in gapsin year.” Kim Ok-kyun and others removed the opposing forces during the celebration of the Friendship State. They moved the king and queen to the If Palace. The Min regime side asked for help from the Qing garrison led by Yuan Skye.

 

On December 6, a group of the Blooming Faction went inside and outside the king to Changdeokgung Palace. At dawn that day decided on the policy of Zhengjiang, but at 3: 00 p.m. 1,500 troops of the Qing Dynasty led by Yuan Skye entered. It was extinguished in three days. 

Currently, the 14th amendment to the reform of the Kaewa Party will abolish the moon punishment and identity system, reduce unnecessary financial institutions, and instead of adjusting, they will hold direct meetings, decide on proposals, and set up a Sunsa. There are quite a lot of provisions for innovation, and there are more than 80 provisions in the Japanese record, but Kim Ok-kyun’s “Gakshin-ilok” only contains 14 provisions, some of which are currently reported.
